The Dig Site

The Excavation site east of Varrock is always open to aspiring archaeologists who can demonstrate that they have what it takes. You'll have to pass their certification exams and get your hands a little dirty, but perhaps it's worth the effort if there are ancient secrets waiting to be unearthed…

Required

Skills:

  • 10 Agility
  • 10 Herblore
  • 25 Thieving

Quests:

  • None

  • 2 Ropes
  • Tinderbox
  • Specimen brush (Obtainable from Digsite workman during quest)
  • Specimen jar (Obtainable from a cupboard in Exam Centre)
  • Panning tray (Obtainable from spawn at the Digsite)
  • Trowel (Obtained from Examiner during the quest)

Recommended Items:

  • 2-3 Varrock teleports

Starting out

To begin, speak with any of the Examiner NPCs located in the Exam Centre south of the Digsite (north of Al Kharid/Southeast of Varrock). Ask about taking an exam to be allowed to use the Digsite, and you will be given an Unstamped letter. Take this to Curator Haig Halen at Varrock museum (located north of the east bank). Return with the Sealed letter to the Examiner and take the level 1 test. What answers you choose this time don't matter, you will always fail.

Archaeologist in training

You now need to locate 3 different students wandering the Digsite. On your way north to the main Digsite area, search the bush shown below to find a teddy bear.

The first student is in the southern area and has blonde hair with a green shirt. He will ask you to find an Animal skull he recently lost. To do so, pickpocket any nearby Digsite workman until you get one. Be sure to also pickpocket until you get a Specimen brush. Return the animal skull to the student, and he'll give you one of the exam answers.

The next student is located to the northwest (twin-tailed blonde wearing purple). She will ask you to retrieve the teddy bear you should have just found earlier. After returning it, she gives you another exam answer.

Now go east until you see the third student (wearing a red shirt and olive pants). He asks you to retrieve his cup, so go south to the gold panning area. Pick up a panning tray, and talk to the panning guide to give him a cup of tea. Pan until you get a Special cup (and optionally also an Opal). Return it to him for a third answer.

Return to the Examiner and take the exam again. The now-available correct answers are as follows: “The study of the earth, its contents and history.” “All that have passed the appropiate Earth Sciences exam.” “Gloves and boots to be worn at all times; proper tools must be used.” Afterwards, you receive a Trowel and level 1 certificate.

Now return to each of the three students and ask them again about the exam. Afterwards, return to the Examiner for the second exam, where the answers are as follows: “Samples taken in rough form; kept only in sealed containers.” “Finds must be carefully handled.” “Always handle with care; strike cleanly on its cleaving point.” After this you get the level 2 certificate.

Repeat the process of talking to each student, only this time the girl in purple will ask for an Opal. After getting the answers once again, return to the Examiner one last time to take the exam, with the following answers: “Samples cleaned, and carried only in specimen jars.” “Brush carefully and slowly using short strokes.” “Handle bones very carefully and keep them away from other samples.” Before you leave, grab a Specimen jar from the cupboard pictured below.

Digging for treasure

Go to either of the level 3 excavation areas (pictured below) and use your Trowel on the soil until you get an Ancient talisman (this can take many attempts).

Go back to the Exam Centre and use it on the Archaeological expert. You will receive an Invitation letter. Use this on one of the Digsite workmen, and you will be allowed into the mineshafts. Use one of your ropes on the Winch pictured below, then operate it to go down.

While down here, first grab an Arcenia root. Search the nearby Brick, then leave. Go to the other Winch located to the northeast, pictured below, and repeat the same process to enter.

Homemade Explosives for Dummies

Talk to Doug Deeping, and ask “How could I move a large pile of rocks?” and he will give you a Chest key. Leave here, and go back to where the panning tray spawn is. Use the Chest key on the chest inside this tent and then search it for a Chemical powder. Now go to the barrels immediately west of here and use your Trowel on the sealed one. Use your Vial on the now open barrel, and you will get Unidentified liquid. Note that dropping this will inflict 25 damage to you (and WILL kill you if you're at or below that much). This can be useful for Dharoking or other situations where you want lower HP, so keep your Trowel after the quest to be able to get more liquid, if you like. Go back to the Archaeological expert, and use both the Unidentified liquid and Chemical powder on him to identify them. Search the bookshelf pictured below to get a Book on chemicals.

Read the book to the end, then use the Ammonium nitrate on the Nitroglycerin, followed by using Ground charcoal on the Mixed chemicals and finally the Arcenia root on the Mixed chemicals. Go back to the first winch you took and enter it again. Use your explosive mixture on the brick, then use your tinderbox on the brick. Afterwards, you're free to explore further into the cave. Grab the Stone tablet in the center of the room, and return to the Archaeological expert. Use the stone tablet on him, and he will commend you on your discovery. Quest complete!
